Social Worker REACTS to Disney's Encanto

Mental Health, Ableism, & Refugees

I'm a registered social worker & therapist, and today's video is my reaction to watching Disney's Encanto for the first time. My goal is to give you a better idea of what aspects of this movie may be accurate from a psychology and social justice perspective, and what they might've gotten wrong.

This video does NOT contain the whole movie sadly or whole songs (sorry folks, gotta follow copyright laws!), but in it I address different mental health, social justice, and ableist themes that I see emerge throughout the movie.

Some topics include:

  • The impact of trauma and of having to flee your home country

  • Ableism

  • Avoidance & scapegoating

  • the danger of toxic perfectionism & suffering in silence
