Frequently Asked Questions

  • How are sessions typically structured?

How sessions flow truly do depend on the client (your needs, your supports, how severe the challenges are, etc). However, a typical structure often looks something like this:

    1. Check-in since last session

    2. Review of the goal/home practice

    3. Exploring & processing thoughts, feelings, and experiences that you might be struggling with

    4. Learning/reviewing & practicing healthy coping strategies

    5. Creating a plan for how to implement the strategies outside of sesssion

  • What can we talk about in therapy?

The short answer is: everything! Therapy can be a space to work through difficult thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Some common topics include:

    - Burnout & stress
    - Self-esteem
    - Health issues & medical trauma
    - Relationships
    - Executive functioning challenges
    - Anxiety & depression
    - Identity
    - Work stress

But it can also be a space to celebrate progress, reinforce growth, and continue to strive towards your hopes for the future!

  • What is ACT, and how can it help me?

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based treatment method that has been found to be effective in a wide variety of mental health concerns, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, people-pleasing, chronic illness/disability, and grief.

Psychology Today helpfully summarizes ACT as: “an action-oriented approach to psychotherapy that stems from traditional behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Clients learn to stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions and, instead, accept that these deeper feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations that should not prevent them from moving forward in their lives. With this understanding, clients begin to accept their hardships and commit to making necessary changes in their behavior, regardless of what is going on in their lives and how they feel about it.”

Unfortunately, psychotherapy in Ontario is not covered under OHIP when performed by a social worker or psychotherapist. However, there may be some coverage available. Brianna is a provider with Hamilton Victim Services (VQRP), as well as NIHB and TIHCSP for Indigenous folks. We provide direct billing for eligible GreenShield and BlueCross plans. Passport funding may also be available for those enrolled in the program.
